Adopt the Dressy Sweatshirt

Posted on 6th June, in UNITED BAMBOO.

Dressing up in the summer is fun, in part, because it can feel so relaxed. Even a hostess who requests that her guests arrive in cocktail attire can usually be assuaged with a crowd clad in long, gauzy sundresses. But for all its comfort—and there is much to be had—the bohemian look is beginning to grow weary. So take a cue from Riccardo Tisci, who showed sporty satin tops for fall, and put on a dressy sweatshirt.

It sounds like an oxymoron, but so did the phrase “designer sweatshirt” until the gray athletic pullover was elevated to the status of a true fashion staple. Now that those have been put away for the season, slightly jazzier versions are taking their place: in sequins at Peter Som, lace at J.Crew, and delicate linen at United Bamboo. “The sweatshirt is the perfect summer evening look,” says Som, who recommends pulling one on with a slim tux pant and flats for effortless ease. “For something more eclectic, pair it with a lace pencil skirt and your highest heels.” They’re fancy without looking formal and work best with a slouchy summer pant—or, if you must, thrown over those long, gauzy sundresses.
