Tokyo based illustrator/painter Kahoko Sodeyama uses a lot of paint in her artwork to create a surface like melted chocolate. She loves antique malls in the U.S. and treasures the knick-knacks she bought in flea markets during her travels. She recently started making artwork out of wood that she cuts by herself.

When I travelled to the countryside of Los Angeles, underneath the blue sky, I passed by many unique signs along the road. Even after I came home I could not forget the presence those worn out wooden signs exuded. They were old, and weathered, and they were beautiful. I was inspired to make one of my own, so I started to make signs from cut wood. The motifs for my wooden “signs” are antique signs, people and buildings in the city. One thing I always keep true to is to always make a piece that I would want to hang in my room, and that I truly think is unique.

Kikuzu-chan came to life from left over wooden pieces that I collected while making wooden artwork. I had so much scrap wood after a while, and so I drew a face on one… and there it was - Kikuzu-chan was born! I paintedKikuzu-chan and put a face on her to make a brooch.

KIDS CASTING CALL

We are looking for 3-5 year old kids (male & female) to model the kid’s fishtail parka coming out Fall 2013. If you would like to submit your kid for casting, please send an email to help@unitedbamboo.com with the following requirements.

1) Your child’s name and age

2) Your child’s height, bust, waist, across shoulder and arm length measurements

3) Your (the parent’s) contact info including full name, mailing address, email address, and phone number

4) 5-8 photos of your kid (it’s good to mix some smiling, some not, some close-up, some full body,etc)

Must live in NYC. Must be available for one day in early April. Details TBD. Compensation for the shoot will be one kid’s fishtail parka for your little one. Please use KIDS CASTING in the subject line of your email.

A story of “New Friends”

Last weekend, we visited Kelly Rakowski of New Friends to check out how this amazing duo came to be.

Tell us how New Friends got started.

We met on the internet! Alex is weirdfriends.tumblr.com and I have the blog Nothing-is-New.com. I was super into Alex’s tumblr because it was filled with crazy weird textiles. We started an email correspondence for a couple months, then decided to work on a project together, even though we still hadn’t met. We discussed parameters and concepts and sent each other packages of yarn so we’d work from the same palette and materials. A few months later I took a bus to Philly, weavings in hand, and met Alex for the first time. When we put our work together they fit together seamlessly. We could barely tell who did which weaving.

Where do you typically work?

Alex works in her home and I work in mine. Space is tight but we’re making do. Someday something wonderful will happen and we’ll have a giant studio space. We do feel limitations, we want to make some mega huge weavings but simply don’t have the space. The nice thing about our work is it’s very portable. I can work at my parents house in Florida no problem. I just take a trip to the art store and build myself a new loom. Just need to pack the yarn.

Is it difficult to work from two different cities? How do you guys make that work?

At times it’s difficult but it’s the only way we know. We continue to work the same way we did in the very beginning before we met. Together we discuss concepts, share inspiration and buy materials. Then we go off and weave on our own. We take iPhone pictures along the way to share our process. We are in constant communication. We do meet and work in person about once or twice a month.

Tell us about your most memorable project?

Once we designed a collection of baskets completely via text message. Alex was at the beach on vacation and I was home on my computer drawing the designs. It was amazing. Alex agrees, we rocked the beach text.

What are you currently working on?

We’re working on a small collection of sweaters based on our weavings. New Friends sweaters! So excited. We are also working on a collection of housewares—blankets, baskets and more.

What are your backgrounds and how did you get into weaving?

I studied graphic design and worked as an art book designer for almost 6 years. I made it a New Years resolution to learn how to weave and did. I got into weaving because I became totally obsessed with textiles. Alex studied textiles at RISD and works as a textile designer in Philly.

New FriendsはAlexandra SegretiとKelly Rakowskiのデュオ。ハンドウィーヴィングで織られた、ユニークな柄と美しい色の一点もの”ウィーヴィングアート”を作っているアーティストです。

先週末、私たちはどのようにして彼女達の素敵なプロダクツが生まれるのかを探りに、Clinton HillにあるKellyの自宅兼スタジオを訪れました。

どのようにしてお二人はNew Friendsを始めることになったのですか？

Kelly: 私たちはインターネットで出会ったの！Alexは weirdfriends.tumblr.com、私は Nothing-is-New.comというブログを持っているのだけど、私がAlexのブログにとても夢中になって。。。彼女のtumblrにはクレイジーなテキスタイルが沢山ポストされていて、それがとても興味深いと思ったの。それから私と彼女はemailでお互いコンタクトするようになって、すぐに意気投合した私たちは数ヶ月後についに一緒にプロジェクトをスタートしよう、と決めました。まだ一度も会ったことがないのに、ね。そこからパラメーターやコンセプトを話し合って、お互いにカラーパレットとマテリアルを共有出来るようにと糸を送り合い、進めていきました。数ヶ月後、出来上がったハンドウィーヴィングの作品を持って、バスに乗り、Alexに会うべくフィラデルフィアへ。Alexと直接会うのはそれが初めてでした。お互いのハンドウィーヴィングを見せ合ったとき、Alexと私の作品は接ぎ目も何もないように、ピッタリとマッチしたのです。お互いにどちらのウィーヴィングをどちらが作ったのか、分からなくなってしまう程それらは同じフィーリングでした。

まさに運命の出逢いだったのですね。　

普段はどちらでお仕事をされていますか？

Kelly:Alexも私も自宅兼スタジオとして仕事をしています。スペースとしては小さいのだけど。いつか素敵な事が起こって、二人で大きなスタジオを持てると信じています。今の小さいスペースではやはり制限があって、私たちは大きなウィーヴィングを作りたい、という気持ちがあるのだけど今のスペースでは残念ながらそれは叶わないの。ただ、良い点もあって、今作っているサイズのウィーヴィングはどこでも持ち歩ける。例えばフロリダに住む両親の家で製作をする、なんて事も何の障害もなく出来る。スーツケースには糸だけ詰め込み、現地でアートショップに木枠を買いに行って組み立てて。

フィラデルフィアとNYという、離れた町で共にプロジェクトをしているお二人ですが、それを障害に思われた事はありますか？

Kelly:もちろんディスタンスは難しい時もあるのだけど、初めて出逢ったときからこのディスタンスでこうしてコミュニケーションをとってきたので。一緒にコンセプトを話し合い、インスピレーションをシェアし、マテリアルを購入してそれぞれ織り始める。プロセスの経過をiphoneピクチャーを取り、それをシェアしながら進めて行くので、コンスタントにコミュニケーションは取っています。そして今では月に１、２度お互いを訪れて直接会うようしています。

一番思い出に残っているプロジェクトは何ですか?

Kelly:バスケットのコレクションをデザインした事があるのだけど、そのプロジェクトはテキストメッセージだけで簡潔したものなの！Alexはバケーション中でビーチにいて、私は家でコンピュータの前に座ってデザインを描いて。AlexもあれはAmazingだったわね！と共感しているわ。

最近進められているプロジェクトを教えて下さい。

Kelly:私たちは今、セーターのスモールコレクションのデザインをしています。New Friendsのセーター！とてもエキサイティングなプロジェクトです。

また、ブランケットやバスケットなどのハウスウェアーも新しく作り始めています。

お二人のバックグラウンドと、そこからどのようにしてハンドウィーヴィングをする事になったのかお聞かせ下さい。

Kelly:わたしはグラフィックデザインを学び、アートブックデザイナーとして６年ほど働いていました。ある年の新年の抱負として、今年はウィーヴィングを学ぼう、と決め、そして実際に行動に移したのです。私がウィーヴィングを始めたのは、テキスタイルにオブセストしているからです。

　AlexはテキスタイルをRISDで学び、フィラデルフィアでテキスタイルデザイナーとして働いています。

　今回はUnited Bamboo online store FEBRUALY SELECTの為にスペシャルウィーヴィングを作って頂く事に。私たちもプロダクツの到着をわくわくしながら待っていました。ついに出来上がったものは”Moon Light” と”Sun Shade”。パワーカップルである月の光と太陽の陰は彼女達自身を連想させます。

これらのこの世にただ一つだけのウィーヴィングアートは、United Bamboo FEBRUALY SELECTにて２月末まで、限定販売中です。
